About Us

What are We?

Harness Tutoring is an online, live tutoring service for NZ secondary students studying NCEA Science and Math subjects. It is a flexible and accessible means of supporting students to raise their achievement, and is the only service of its kind in New Zealand.

Tutorial sessions are run through a ‘virtual classroom’ using a conferencing interface that directly connects students with experienced New Zealand teachers. Notes are co-constructed throughout the session and are emailed to the student when the tutorial finishes along with a link to the live recording for future reference.

Why the word ‘Harness’?

  1. Historically, harnesses bear the stress when a working horse is backed up or is going downhill.
Harness Tutoring assists with the stress of an NCEA subject when a student is not moving forward in the way they would like to be.
  2. To be engaged in work: After he failed his first assessment, Jonathan wanted to get back in the harness.
Harness Tutoring helps students to get back up again and do well after they have experienced a set- back eg missed classes, lack of understanding, lack of success etc
  3. To work together as cooperating partners: Joe and I worked in harness to raise his achievement.
Harness Tutoring works alongside students to support them in raising their knowledge, understanding and subsequent achievement.
  4. To gain control over something for a particular end: Jess was able to gain control of her learning and harness her true potential.
Harness Tutoring assists students to gain control over their learning in order to help them to reach their goal grades in NCEA assessments.
